ABOUT BLUELABEL

Climate change is rapidly introducing climate related risks for the urban environment. Extreme weather events are occurring more frequently, and the impacts of these events are more dramatic than before. It is essential to understand and quantify these risks, in order to be able to plan, implement and manage flood resilient activities – from infrastructure and development, to the daily running of lives and businesses.

BlueLabel provides insight into flood risks at your fingertips by offering the first digital water vulnerability scan in the world that gives detailed information into rain induced flooding down to the square metre. This translates into a risk label on individual buildings, streets and infrastructure. The ultimate aim is to encourage and be proactive in preventing disasters, rather than devising recovery measures in the aftermath.

How does it work

BlueLabel provides clear insight into the areas where rainwater flooding can occur and givesdetailed information down to the square metre. This translates into a risk label, or ranking, on individual buildings, streets and infrastructure.

For who?

As a digital information service, BlueLabelaims to empower governments, cities, industries, organisations and individuals to take targeted measuresthat focus on mitigating risk with insight can be used to effectively plan interventions towards greater flood resilience.

Stress Test

The Netherland’s Delta Programme for 2018 states that every municipality must have carried out a climate stress test by 2019. BlueLabel allows cities such as Rotterdam, an early adopter of the system, to map and measure the impact of flooding.

INTRODUCTION
TO THE MAP

To determine the BlueLabel ranking of a land parcel, structure or road, reliable information is needed about the depth of water on and around the plot in case of flooding due to extreme rainfall. BlueLabel uses innovative smart technology to translate this information into an easily understandable ranking on our BlueMaps, which is depicted visually for each property, street and infrastructure object – allowing people to understand risk at a glance. In the map you can see, for the Netherlands, the distribution of labels (A to E) per municipal area, and you can search for a particular zipcode area to get more detailed label distribution information in that area. Note that the descriptions are in Dutch due to publication via the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation (www.nos.nl), but we are happy to answer any questions in English where needed.
